For area students who excel academically but have a demonstrated financial need, dreams of higher education may appear to be out of reach.  But for those who meet the eligibility criteria, The Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County is here to help make those dreams a reality.

With a laser-focus of raising and awarding funds for college scholarships since its founding in 1958, The Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County was formed when area civic leaders and Chamber of Commerce members came together to address the scarcity of available scholarships for the area’s high school seniors.

Since that time, The Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County, Inc., has awarded nearly $6 million dollars in aid to local students for attending accredited, 4-year colleges and universities. The privately funded Foundation also offers non-traditional scholarships for students whose college career was interrupted or students who are seeking a new degree or professional certification.

True to their founders’ process, The Scholarship Foundation employs an objective application and selection process which is based on both academic performance and financial need.  With a mission to ensure that every St. Joseph County high school student with the academic qualifications and desire to attend college will be given the opportunity, they cannot advance their mission without the help of generous donors and volunteers from our community.

Managed by a local governing board that believes in stewardship excellence, The Scholarship Foundation has just one paid employee and relies on the support of nearly 75 current and retired area professionals who volunteer their time mentoring scholarship recipients – with the understanding that success is more likely when students have a carefully-selected mentor to help guide them over the course of their journey to higher education.

In addition, The Foundation also sponsors the area’s largest IACAC-sanctioned College Fair, which is held annually in October and provides students and their parents an opportunity to speak directly with admissions representatives from more than 80 colleges and universities across the nation.

Paul Stevenson, President of The Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County, states, “For 65 years, we have been blessed with visionary founders, supportive mentors, and generous donors who have enabled us to provide over $6 million in scholarship support to more than 5,000 dedicated students.  Please join us on April 20 at Morris Park for our official 65th Anniversary celebration and our commitment to even greater support for future generations of area students."

Congratulations to The Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County, the Indiana Trust Nonprofit Spotlight award recipient for January of 2023, as they celebrate their 65th year of providing some of the area’s hardest-working students with the mentorship and financial assistance necessary to make their dreams of higher education an attainable reality!

About the Indiana Trust Nonprofit Spotlight Program

Indiana Trust Wealth Management launched the Indiana Trust Nonprofit Spotlight program initiative in January 2021, which consists of recognizing, rewarding, and promoting a nonprofit organization in one or more of the company’s footprint areas on a monthly basis, as a way to highlight various nonprofit organizations throughout the year and bring attention to the good work being done in the communities they serve. Under the Nonprofit Spotlight initiative, the nonprofit organization will receive a $1,000 corporate donation and be eligible for employee gift-matching throughout the year. David R. Kibbe, JD, President & CEO, states, “As a majority employee-owned company, matching our employees’ contributions is an opportunity for Indiana Trust to support those nonprofits whose missions connect with our employees."
